Ak-Chin is located in a lush desert area, 43 miles northwest of the Casa Grande Ruins National Monument, which consists of well-preserved remains of a central four story building and several smaller outlying buildings constructed by the Hohokam Indians during the 13th century.
West of Ak-Chin, low picturesque mountains enclose the scenic oasis on the desert. Remnants of other civilizations which inhabited the basin during earlier times are still evident.
The entire tribe participates in the first EcoMuseum in the United States. An EcoMuseum is distinguished from a conventional musem as land and territory replace museum buildings. This museum acts as an exhibit and storage area for prehistoric local artifacts owned by tribal families.
The Reservation is located near Casa Grande (fantastic outlet store shopping!) and 25 miles from Phoenix making it easily accessible for day trips. Harrah's Ak-Chin Casino is located on the Reservation.
Major events held:
St. Francis Church Feast (October 4)
Honoring Past Chairmen's Day (October)
Annual Tribal Election (2nd Saturday in January)
Ak-Chin Him-Dak Museum Celebration (April)
The Ak-Chin Indians are noted for basketry.
