Fort Apache Reservation covers more than 1.6 million acres in east central Arizona. The southwestern stretches of the reservation (Salt River Canyon in Gila County) contrasts sharply with the northeastern forested lands (in Navajo and Apache Counties - Mt. Baldy).
Whiteriver is the largest town and serves as the hub of tribal government offices. Located 190 miles from Phoenix (via US 60) and 35 miles from Show Low, Whiteriver is easily accessed by either destination.
Tribal lands contain some of Arizona's most scenic and plentiful recreation areas. Sunrise Park Ski Resort, 25 lakes (excellent fishing) 420 miles of trout streams, and more than 7000 campsites are located on reservation land.
Salt River Canyon - Arizona's "Other Canyon" - provides breathtaking canyon views at convenient pull-out areas along the road leading to the bottom of the canyon. US 60 is steep mountain grade and has sharp turns and curves along the route but can be easily traveled at posted speed limits. Viewing areas at the bottom of the canyon overlook whitewater areas of Salt River and the canyon walls.
The tribe operates Hon-Dah Casino located a few miles outside Pinetop Arizona.
Major events held:
White Mountain Apache Tribal Fair and Rodeo
(first weekend in September)
The tribe is noted for basketry (Burden Baskets), and beadwork.
